Andrew J. Fernandes, 81, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at his home in Newington where he lived for over 40 years. He was the beloved husband of Maureen (Glennon) Fernandes. Mr. Fernandes was born October 6, 1921 in Milford, MA, the son of the late Jose and Laurinda (Mendes) Fernandes.
Andy served as treasurer for the Hartford Unit of Irish Northern Aid for many years. He was honored at the annual New York City awards dinner by the national organization for his twenty-five years of services to NORAID. Andy was also a lifetime member of the Irish American Home Society where he served as chairman of the scholarship fund.
Andy was retired from Central Conn. State University where he served as the Director of Fiscal Affairs. Prior to CCSU, he was an Associate Director with the U.S. Treasury Dept. in Hartford and also worked for Combustion Engineering and Chandler-Evans Corp. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Philippines.
He will be remembered for his warm smile and the professionalism he brought to everything he did. Besides his wife, he leaves his daughter, Karen Frisbie and her husband, Raymond, of Newington and their children, Raymond Frisbie, Jr. and his wife, Trina, Lisa Frisbie, Ricky Frisbie, all of Newington; his son, John Fernandes and his wife, Brenda, of Higganum and her son, Eric Stebbins; his two great grandchildren, Brandon and Stephanie; his two brothers, Anthony Mortagua, of Cheshire, Abel "Hap" "Peanuts" Fernandes and his late wife, Jean, of El Paso, TX; his sister, Irene Soares and her husband, Adelino, of Newington; a beloved sister-in-law, Rosaleen Thompson and her husband Carlo, of Newington and her children, Andrea, Robert, and Brian; and his two other sisters-in-law, Peggy, of London, England, and Mary Fernandes, of Florida; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his step-father, Antonio Mortagua; and his brother, Mac Fernandes.
